Places to visit in Amarkantak

We visited Pachmarhi in early 2000 and found it to a be a really pleasant little town. As you say, it's a great area if you want to do some trekking but we just went cycling and bird-watching around the plateau.

It seems to have always been off the beaten track. Even when Captain Forsythe, a British army officer "discovered" it about 150 years ago there seemed to be very few people living in the area. The British developed it as a hill station and also built some sanitariums there and even today you can hear the sound of bagpipes coming from the Indian Army base.

When we were there the Madhya Pradesh Tourist Development Corporation was beginning to promote the place on an India-wide basis. If anyone's thinking of going there, then I would say the sooner, the better.

Ahhhhh....Patchmari. After the stress and stain of Rajasthan...the tourist triangle seems to be more congested every season....Patchmari was a dream. But, there are often bus loads of noisy local tourists (nothing negative....it's just that companies, clubs and weekenders from the MP plains usually make the trip up together and like to scream the stress away). Great place with excellent walks on well-marked, but little used trails. Great values on hotels...though the food was unremarkable. Definetly take the day walk up to the Dupgarh peak....excellent views of the whole plateau. Also, the ride up is fabulous, esp. the view of the waterfalls.....HIGHLY RECOMMENDED! Try to avoid the festival season, though. Crowded, noisy and no accomodation! First time i went there when i was a boy scout ..way back in 1986 Since then have been going there many times. Last in April 2004. Always loved the tranquility of that place..

But its not cool in summers...As said by puneet the temps are just 2-3 degress below than bhopal.

Best season is October-November...when the forest is lush green and waterfalls are on their peak, We went to pachmarhi during Diwali holidays in 2006 and we saw mad rush everywhere we went. We had a tough time getting accomodation in the hotels and the local cab drivers charged very high for the sight seeing trips. We were charged Rs.1000/- for a visit to a place called Bee fall from the town (due to high demand) - I would advice one should not try to visit this place during holiday seasons like Diwali, Dusshera etc.,
