In 1968 it was declared as the national park of India which spreads over an area of 448 sq km out of which 150 sq km is buffer zone. According to several Hindu mythologies this park derives its name from the most prominent hillock of the area, which according to mythology was given by Lord Rama to his brother Lakshmana to keep a watch on Lanka (Ceylon).
