Hampi is a rustic village dotted with the mesmerizing ruins which once belonged to the Vijayanagara Empire. Spread across an area of 26 sq km, the ruins encompass palaces, temples and other monuments. The village is a religious center where several beautiful temples can be seen. This historic village also finds mention in the great Hindu Epic Ramayana. Situated on the banks of Tungabhadra river, the village abounds in large stones which were used to make huge statues of the Hindu deities.
Although there are several wonderful temples in Hampi but nothing compares the charm of the beautiful Virupaksha Temple. Dating back to the 15th century, it is a living temple. Its rajagopuram is the tallest structure in the village. Dedicated to Lord Shiva, it is located in the Hampi bazaar.
Some of the dominating features of the Hampi temples are huge gates, open courtyards, beautifully carved walls, amazingly designed shrines, open pillared pavallions and monolithic idols.
